'Happy Feet' Sequel En Route

Rumor has it the feet stomping penguins are lining up to return to the big screen. The Academy Award-winning animated feature "Happy Feet" about a poor in singing but genius at tap dancing young penguin, has been noted to be getting its sequel, "Happy Feet 2", done by Dr. D Studios.

At the website of Dr. D, the sequel to the George Miller-directed animation movie has been listed under the category of "In Production". Supporting the development of the sequel, the company formed by Omnilab Media Group and filmmaker George Miller also let out a press release stating, "We are currently working on Happy Feet 2, with several other film projects to follow and we are actively hiring."

Kudos and recognition still get directed to "Happy Feet" as the prancing penguin toon was named best feature film at this year's Environmental Media Association Awards, which celebrated its seventeenth anniversary yesterday, October 24, 2007.

The Warner Bros. Pictures release was recognized for its ecologically uplifting and informative message, particularly the campaign to stop commercial overfishing of the Antarctic. Pic beat out its three competitors of "Evan Almighty," "Fast Food Nation", and "Miss Potter."

A satisfying outcome has successfully been scored by "Happy Feet." IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures both announced yesterday, December 20, that the animated penguin romp has delightfully garnered $10.6 million in IMAX theaters since its premiere on November 17, 2006.

"The combination of 'Happy Feet' and The IMAX Experience has clearly captured the hearts of moviegoers this holiday season," Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment Greg Foster commented. "We are thrilled that the film has already reached this milestone in IMAX theatres."

The tap-dancing fever apparently still circulates heavily around the moviegoers as "Happy Feet" gloriously extends its rule on the weekend U.S box office for a third straight week, paving its way to be the one most profitable animated features of the year for sure.

Sold $17.5 million worth of tickets in the three days beginning December 1, the prancing penguin toon once again successfully bests its rival "Casino Royale" which stays firmly as the runner-up with $15.1 million to make a three-week haul of $115.9 million.

Extending its initial success, animated picture "Happy Feet" has delightfully set a new record at IMAX for being the strongest opening ever for an animated title showed in the theaters. Debuted in 79 IMAX screens, the flick strived to score a three-day per-screen average of approximately $30,000 during November 17-19, 2006 to amazingly make up a $2.4 million tally altogether.

"We are thrilled with the opening weekend success of 'Happy Feet' in both conventional theatres and IMAX theatres," said Warner Bros. Pictures' President of Domestic Distribution Dan Fellman remarked. "The IMAX version has been well received by moviegoers of all ages, continuing IMAX's tradition of turning exciting films into events for the entire family."

A really tight race has marked the weekend box-office competition this time as two rookies emerged to battle fiercely for the no. 1 title, but in the end, it's the tap-dancing penguin from "Happy Feet" that finally rules over.

Drawing in a tremendous income of $41.5 million in its three-day run on the chart ended Sunday, November 19, 2006, the Warner Bros. CG animated penguin romp triumphantly beats its closest rival "Casino Royale" as the latest outing of 007 series scores slightly below at $40.8 million.

No IMAX 3D for "Happy Feet"

There won't be a 3-D version of "Happy Feet" in IMAX. Warner Bros. Pictures as the film's production company has changed its original plan to release the animated musical comedy in IMAX 3D and will play the flick in IMAX 2D instead on November 17, the same day it opens in conventional theaters, Comingsoon.net has learned.

Reason behind the change is still unknown, but one thing for sure is that the conversion process of the movie will cost quite a large sum for Warner which can reach up to $10 million. The company itself recently released the IMAX 3D of "The Ant Bully" after previously gained success with that of Robert Zemeckis' "The Polar Express" back in 2004.
