Borat Wins Alabama Lawsuit
January 19, 2008 03:01:51Though sued by many, evidently "Borat" once again wins the judges' heart as on Friday, January 18, the nine-member Alabama Supreme Court overruled a lawsuit filed by Kathie Martin. The justices who sided with Sacha Baron Cohen said that the etiquette teacher cannot sue Cohen and the production companies of the comedy movie because Martin has signed an agreement stating only courts in New York could hear any disputes that arose from her appearance.
On dismissal of the lawsuit, Justice Mike Bolin wrote "It is sufficient to say that an eventful meal ensued during which the alleged reporter engaged in behavior that would generally be considered boorish and offensive." Following the ruling, neither Martin nor The 20th Century Fox gave out comment.

Anonymously identified as John Doe, the man placed a lawsuit to federal court in Manhattan last week over the scene in which he is seen "fleeing in apparent terror, screaming for Mr. Cohen to 'go away." "Borat" Fraud Lawsuit Dismissed
February 22, 2007 02:02:26All apparently ends well for the 20th Century Fox regarding the "Borat" versus the two college guys case. Los Angeles Judge Joseph Biderman has finally granted its request to scuttle the fraud lawsuit placed by Christopher Rotunda and Justin Seay who alleged that they were tricked to make racist and sexist comments in the flick.
Fox's attorney, Louis Petrich, previously filed a motion Wednesday, February 14 claiming that the movie at the center of the lawsuit brought against the company and actor Sacha Baron Cohen obviously falls within the state's definition of speech regarding matters of public concern and so, asked the legal suit to be dismissed in turn.

"Plaintiffs may claim that they were tricked 'into making fools out of themselves' and becoming 'unsuspecting players' in the movie 'Borat,"' the studio said. "They never contend ... that bigoted and misogynistic statements were put into their mouths."

Cindy Streit, the name of the woman, alleged that she was told that the shooting would be used for a documentary in Belarus instead of a fictional film and got so shocked upon learning that she became the object of ridicule in the movie.

"Borat" May Be Barred from Russian Screens
November 10, 2006 02:11:05Negative reaction on "Borat" apparently still continues out there despite the flick's worldwide success. A government agency in Russia has recently remarked that it would reject granting permission for the mockumentary comedy to be shown in theaters around the country, a local distributor has learned.
According to Vadim Ivanov, theatrical sales director at Twentieth Century Fox C.I.S., the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography seemingly perceived the film to have great possibility to offend some viewers due to its material that "might seem disparaging in relation to certain ethnic groups and religions." Russia itself is known to have close political ties with Kazakhstan, whose officials and citizens have seethed at the depiction of their country.
