"Amazing Grace" Finding Way to U.S
August 31, 2006 02:08:52"Amazing Grace" finally can make its way to U.S theaters. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Independent distributors Samuel Goldwyn Films and Roadside Attractions have secured the U.S distribution rights to this slave trade-drama of Michael Apted's direction. Both companies are set to release the film on February 23 next year to mark the 200th anniversary of the British parliament's vote to abolish the slave trade.
A production of Bristol Bay Prods., "Grace" tells about the real story of William Wilberforce in his effort to end slavery at the turn of the 19th century with the help of his wife and slave trader-turned-abolitionist Rev. John Newton. Cast includes Ioan Gruffudd, Albert Finney, Rufus Sewell, Ciaran Hinds, and Michael Gambon. Steven Knight has been tapped to pen the script with Patricia Heaton and Terrence Malick seating as producers.

Romola Garai, Michael Gambon and Rufus Sewell have all joined the film top cast, which include Ioan Gruffudd as British anti-slavery pioneer William Wilberforce and Albert Finney as Wilberforce's confidante John Newton.
Also signed on to star in are Ciaran Hinds, Benedict Cumberbatch and Youssou N'Dour. Based on the life of Wilberforce, the film follows his 18th century political career, which placed him at odds with some of the most powerful men of the time, including the king.

Gruffudd Saying Grace
September 14, 2005 10:09:22The life of British anti-slavery pioneer William Wilberforce has touched actor Ioan Gruffudd that he's signed on to portray the hero in the upcoming film, "Amazing Grace." The film chronicles Wilberforce's 18th century political career, which placed him at odds with some of the most powerful men of the time, including the king.
Steven Knight wrote the screenplay, while Michael Apted will direct the movie for Walden Media. Joining the cast is Albert Finney, who is set to play John Newton, a Wilberforce confidant.
