April 01, 2008 03:04:04Helen Mirren, the English actress who earned herself an Academy Award prize for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen", has been signed in for the upcoming biopic "The Last Station" to take over another acclaimed actress' role. According to Variety, the 62-year-old actress will be playing Leo Tolstoy's wife Sophia, a role once belonged to Meryl Streep.
By replacing Streep, the "Elizabeth I" star will be joining the other cast that include James McAvoy, Anne-Marie Duff and Paul Giamatti. In the project, she would star opposite Christopher Plummer, who replaced Anthony Hopkins in portraying Tolstoy. The notable actress is expected to join the filming which will begin on April 7.

Turns out New York Film Critics Online is not the only one that gave honors to members of the film industry on Sunday, December 10 as the Los Angeles Film Critics Association also announced on the same day those worthy to receive its LAFCA Awards, which will be held on January 14, 2007.
Seemingly had the same taste with the National Board of Review, the organization delightfully picked "Letters from Iwo Jima" as the Best Picture along with "An Inconvenient Truth" as Best Documentary and Helen Mirren of "The Queen" as Best Actress. Forest Whitaker was named Best Actor, too for his portrayal in "The Last King of Scotland", only this time he had to share the honor with "Borat" star Sacha Baron Cohen.

Held the event annually based on votes conducted by 26 Internet film critics, the New York Film Critics Online announced yesterday, December 10, the winners of its NYFCO Awards for year 2006 at O'Neals' Restaurant on the Upper West Side in Manhattan.
The group gave most prizes to Stephen Frears' "The Queen", bestowing five which included the Best Picture, Best Actress for Helen Mirren, and Best Supporting Actor for Michael Sheen.

Holding the first major award event of the Oscar season, National Board of Review picked up notable film titles and names as the honorees at its 77th Annual National Board of Review Awards on Wednesday, December 6.
For Best Film 2006, the organization cast its choice on "Letters from Iwo Jima", the second half of Clint Eastwood's two-part look at World War II, placing it on the top spot of its Top Ten Film list which includes "Babel," "Blood Diamond," "The Departed", and "Little Miss Sunshine."

Giving much more highlight to fantasy drama flick "Inkheart", Helen Mirren, Andy Serkis, Rafi Gavron, and Sienna Guillory have all come down to take part in the project, joining the likes of Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany, and Jim Broadbent in turn.
Here Mirren will play a book collector named Elinor Loredan while Serkis is billed to portray a villainous character called Capricorn. Filming is scheduled to start next month in Italy then London with Iain Softley directing based on David Lindsay-Abaire's script.

That Ben Affleck was one of the big winners at the 63rd annual Venice Film Festival, it's a big surprise. The Hollywood actor surprised many when his name was mentioned to win the Best Actor award at the ceremony, thanks to his portrayal as George Reeves in "Hollywoodland".
It is a drama mystery thriller flick directed by Allen Coulter. As of the story, "Hollywoodland" dramatizes an investigation into the death of George Reeves, star of the 1950s TV show "Adventures of Superman." Did not attend the ceremony, Affleck however sent a message of thanks from Los Angeles via his BlackBerry, saying he was "surprised, flattered and honored".

Following her comments made during the 2006 Emmy Awards live telecast on Sunday, August 27, Helen Mirren has received complaints from the Parents Television Council (PTC). The organization claimed the actress' language to be indecent as she joked she almost fell "a** over t*t" upon stepping up to receive one of the night's Best Actress awards for her portrayal of the title role in HBO's "Elizabeth I."
What made PTC so infuriated over it was that the comments aired before 10 p.m. in the Central and Mountain time zones, when federal law prevents obscene language on over-the-air broadcasts. The organization officials consider that NBC as the network broadcasting the awards event should have censored the comments.
