'Angels and Demons' Prevails at North American Box Office
May 18, 2009 09:05:10"Angels & Demons" has answered the often-thrown-in question on whether or not it could dethrone "Star Trek" by securing North American box office's top slot. Over the weekend, the sequel to 2006 hit "The Da Vinci Code" hauled in $46 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada.
Despite its prominent rank at the box office this weekend, "Angels" did not meet industry's expectation which was projected around $53 million to $57 million. Compared to its predecessor, this Ron Howard-directed thriller earned much less since its opening bow was around 37% off from "Da Vinci" which stormed the box office with $77.1 million debut.
'Star Trek' Conquers the Box Office
May 11, 2009 10:05:41"Star Trek" has beamed itself to the #1 North American box office over the weekend. Pushing aside last week's champion "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", this J.J. Abrams-directed sci-fi collected $75.2 million from approximately 7,400 screens at 3,849 sites in its first weekend in theaters.
The stellar number has given the movie starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Eric Bana among many others the biggest Trek opening yet, beating out the franchise's previous record opening weekend by 1996's "Star Trek: First Contact". While among franchise restarts its opening bow could not overshadow "Wolverine"'s $85.1 million debut, it did outdo 2005's "Batman Begins" and 2006's "Superman Returns".

Those two categories aside, "Twilight" also garnered a Best Female Performance nomination for leading actress Kristen Stewart. It also earned the chances to win the golden popcorn for Best Fight (Robert Pattinson vs. Cam Gigandet); for Best Kiss (Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson); and for a new category, Best Song From a Movie (Paramore's "Decode").
'Knowing' Tops North American Box Office
March 23, 2009 09:03:47Opened in theaters across the U.S. on Friday, March 20, "Knowing" has led the North American box office over the weekend and outsold its strongest competitors, "I Love You, Man" and "Duplicity" in the process. The Alex Proyas-directed thriller which was screened on approximately 4,300 screens at 3,332 sites has collected a solid bow with $24.6 million.
Starring Nicolas Cage as an astrophysicist who comes across an encrypted message containing prophecy of global cataclysm, the movie has become the actor's fifth-biggest movie opening of his career following "Ghost Rider", "National Treasure" and "National Treasure: Book of Secrets". It also marked Cage's ninth #1 film at the box office since 1997.
'Race to Witch Mountain' Blasts the Box Office, 'Watchmen' Plummets Down
March 16, 2009 10:03:53Opened in 3,187 theaters across the U.S. last Friday, March 13, Disney's "Race to Witch Mountain" has taken the top slot at the North American box office from last week champion "Watchmen". Exceeding analysts' expectation, the adventure comedy movie has raced to the #1 slot by garnering $24.4 million over the weekend.
While its opening bow wasn't as big as "Horton Hears a Who!", this Walt Disney Pictures' family-oriented adventure has soared above The Rock's previous starring movie by the mouse house, "The Game Plan". "Race to Witch Mountain" bow was also bigger than what "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D", "The Last Mimzy" and "Sky High" had collected previously.
'Watchmen' Rules North American and Overseas Box Office
March 10, 2009 09:03:40Off to a decent-but-not-spectacular start with an estimated $4.6 million, "Watchmen" followed it through by securing both the #1 slot at the North American as well as the overseas box office. The highly-anticipated live-action movie from director Zack Snyder opened solidly with $55.2 million from the U.S. and Canadian markets, and with $27.5 million from the overseas market.
While "Watchmen" sales was far behind Snyder's another impressive movie "300" on its first weekend, the Warner Bros. Pictures film has secured the 12th place for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a comic book movie, trailing behind "Fantastic Four", at the North American box office. Still, if ticket-price inflation is calculated, it will be in the 20th position.
'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' Cast Hermione Granger's Mother
March 05, 2009 11:03:03With filming of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I" falling into place a few weeks ago, an interesting casting report comes in. The Coleraine Times brought to the surface that actress Michelle Fairley has been picked up to play the Muggle dentist and the mother of Emma Watson's Hermione Granger.
Expressing her excitement of joining the blockbuster production, Fairley admitted, "I'm delighted as I've a lot of friends and family and their children who all love Harry Potter, so it's lovely to be involved. I've never seen any of the Harry Potter movies or read any of the books." On her role as Mrs. Granger, she additionally commented, "It's not a very large part, maybe three or four scenes which will take just a few days filming. But it's very nice indeed for me."
'Jonas Brothers 3D' Fails to Secure Top Slot at North American Box Office
March 02, 2009 12:03:17Predicted to gross in the $25 million range, "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" missed industry expectations by a clear mile. What makes it even worse, the 3-D concert movie toplined by musical trio Jonas Brothers did not even manage to get close to what its predecessor, "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour", hauled in 2008.
While "Hannah Montana" concert tour movie which was shown in 683 sites collected an impressive $31.1 million during its opening weekend, "Jonas Brothers 3D" pulled in a disappointing bow of $12.5 million from 1,271 venues. On the box office chart, it also couldn't steal the top position from "Madea Goes to Jail", debuting second to the Tyler Perry's latest hit comedy.

With the impressive bow, "Goes to Jail" secured the top rank as the best opening for any Lionsgate release, surpassing the $33.6 million debut for "Saw III". It has also been claimed to be the fifth-biggest bow for any film in February by Lionsgate Entertainment Corp unit, and marked Perry's largest debut since his previous best opening was the $30 million bow for "Madea's Family Reunion" in 2006.
