As Andrew Beckett in "Philadelphia" (1993)
A persistent gay man with a cause is another prominent character by Tom Hanks. In what is called to be "the performance of his career", he takes the role of Andrew Beckett, a hotshot law graduate who sued the law firm where he works for unfair dismissal rooted from his AIDS and homosexuality. Through this character, Hanks once again manipulates emotions. This time, he lends humanity and vibrancy to Beckett, portraying the dying Bennett as a genuine human being and in a manner that eschews maudlin to garner sympathy.
