As Jimmy Dugan in "A League of Their Own" (1992)
Not many can turn a jerk into a loveable character like Tom Hanks does with Jimmy Dugan in "A League of Their Own". Through this Penny Marshall's dramedy, Hanks offers classic act as he shifts between bawdy humor and dramatic credibility with an everyman's ease in delivering this down-on-his-luck manager. Starting out as a "fall-down drunk" who despises his all-ladies team and cares about nobody but himself, Hanks slowly builds up the image that this has-been-baseball-player-turned-manager has his own softer side. He steals sentiment when he sobers up and awkwardly, yet charmingly assists the women to achieve their dreams.
