AceShowbiz - Viggo Mortensen, renowned for his iconic portrayal of Aragorn in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, has expressed enthusiastic support for Jamie Dornan stepping into the role in the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. This news was revealed by Andy Serkis, who directs and stars as Gollum in the project, during an interview on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast.
During the podcast, Andy Serkis shared that Mortensen is “thrilled” about the recasting and fully endorses Dornan as the new Aragorn, also known as Strider. When asked if that meant Viggo Mortensen had given his seal of approval, Serkis replied with a confident “100 percent.” This endorsement highlights a positive transition for fans concerned about the change in casting for such a beloved character.
Despite the excitement, Serkis refrained from discussing the reasons behind Mortensen’s decision not to reprise the role at this time. He mentioned wanting to reserve those details for "further down the line," emphasizing a careful approach to casting announcements and story reveals.
The casting of Jamie Dornan was first officially announced at CinemaCon during Warner Bros.’ panel, signaling a fresh take on Middle-earth’s rich lore. Serkis had previously hinted at this casting choice in a conversation with ScreenRant before the 2026 convention, stating simply, “Let's just say we are recasting the role, and we are on the way to finding someone.”
Alongside Dornan as Aragorn and Serkis reprising his role as Sméagol/Gollum, the film’s ensemble includes several returning and new cast members. Legendary actor Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf, while Kate Winslet joins the cast as Marigol, Leo Woodall as Halvard, Lee Pace as Thranduil, and Elijah Wood returns as Frodo. This blend of familiar faces and new talent aims to build a compelling narrative within the established Middle-earth universe.
Serkis described The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum as a film set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It focuses on a physical and psychological pursuit of Gollum, exploring the character’s complexity beyond the original film portrayals. He teased that the movie will be “a big ride” and an exciting addition to the franchise.
He explained, “Our film is situated between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and it's The Hunt for Gollum, and it is a physical hunt for the character, but also a psychological hunt for himself. So we're just about on the launchpad now, and it's very exciting. And yeah, it's going to be a big ride.” This indicates that the storyline will delve deep into the inner struggles of one of Tolkien’s most enigmatic characters.
In terms of production, Serkis shared that filming is imminent, and the project benefits from the return of the original Lord of the Rings creative team. He emphasized that the movie remains firmly grounded in the lore and visual style established by Peter Jackson’s acclaimed trilogy and The Hobbit films, ensuring authenticity for fans.
“I mean, the entire Lord of the Rings team who worked on the originals are reassembled for a start. So it is grounded in the lore, the world, and the vision of Peter Jackson's trilogy and the Hobbit trilogy. So it will feel like a proper Middle-earth film, there's no question,” Serkis said.
He also highlighted the film’s unique approach, describing it as “a much more internal, psychological investigation into one of Tolkien's most complex characters, i.e., Gollum.” This blend of a new story with a familiar world promises a fresh yet respectful addition to the franchise. Serkis acknowledged the challenge of balancing these elements but remained confident in the outcome.
“I think it is a tightrope for sure, but it'll certainly feel like ... I mean, a lot of the filmmaking techniques are ones which we are employing, which harken back to the first trilogy. So I think it'll be a great marriage of a new story and an intimate story within the law and world of Middle-earth that we all love, and the fans ... But you've got to remember that for some people, this will be their first Middle-earth film. So that's why it's been such an interesting journey,” he explained.
The film is scheduled to be released on December 17, 2027, and fans can expect a fresh narrative that respects the legacy of the original films while introducing new dimensions to the Middle-earth saga.
Overall, the endorsement from Viggo Mortensen and the involvement of key original cast and crew members underscore the project’s commitment to quality and respect for the beloved Tolkien universe. With Jamie Dornan taking on the iconic role of Aragorn and Andy Serkis leading the direction, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is poised to be a significant entry in the franchise.
