Voice actor Ralph Gunderman, known for Dateline and David Letterman sketches, dies at 77 from pneumonia complications.

AceShowbiz - Ralph Gunderman, the warm-voiced artist known for his longtime work as the announcer on NBC’s Dateline and as a contributor to comedy sketches on Late Show With David Letterman, has passed away at 77.
Ralph Gunderman died on March 1 at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York due to complications from pneumonia, a family spokesperson confirmed.
Born in Cleveland on September 6, 1948, Gunderman relocated to New York in 1981 and built a prolific career as a freelance national voice-over artist. Over nearly four decades before retiring in 2021, his voice was featured in thousands of commercials, promos, and narrations.
On CBS’ Late Show, Gunderman was a familiar presence, often providing the voice behind fake "announcements" and spoof "commercials" during David Letterman’s monologues. He was part of a small group of voice actors including Sara Krieger, Sam Fried, Robb Webb, and J.R. Horne who contributed to these comedic moments.
Beyond television, his voice can also be heard in the 2003 film Red Betsy, the animated series Our Cartoon President, and the video game Star Wars: The Old Republic.
As the fourth of seven children, Gunderman developed a passion for radio and performance early in life, working at the University of Akron’s college radio station WRHA. During his college years, he gained experience as a deejay at WING in Dayton and WCUE in Akron.
After graduating in 1970, Gunderman transitioned to television roles in Cleveland, working at WKBF and as a booth announcer at WEWS.
Throughout his career, Gunderman also served on the national boards of both the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA).
Despite his voice-over fame, Gunderman cherished live theater, frequently performing lead roles in productions such as Cyrano, The Ruling Class, El Grande de Coca Cola, and Talley’s Folly.
His family shared that he found great joy in singing cabaret and, after retirement, participated in a monthly Cover Collective at An Beal Bocht, an Irish café in the Bronx. He was also known to be an avid cruciverbalist, enjoying crossword puzzles.
They noted with fond humor that Gunderman was a "consummate believer in the power of negative thinking" who had "hopelessly wished for a Cleveland baseball championship," the last of which occurred in the year he was born.
Ralph Gunderman is survived by his second wife, Pamela, whom he married in April 2022; his son Benjamin; and his siblings Ann, Ruth, Colette, Clare, and Joseph.
A celebration of his life is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday at Community Unitarian Universalist Congregation in White Plains, New York. A second memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. on August 1 at Olmsted Community Church in Olmsted Falls, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to WNYC Radio, the National Resources Defense Council, and Feeding Westchester.
