AceShowbiz - Red Rocks marks the latest feature from acclaimed filmmaker Bruno Dumont, returning to the Cannes Film Festival with a fresh addition to the Directors' Fortnight lineup. The film, described as a Romeo and Juliet-style romantic drama, is set against the picturesque backdrop of the French Riviera and was announced as a late addition to this year’s section on Thursday.
Bruno Dumont is no stranger to the Directors' Fortnight, a parallel sidebar to Cannes’ main festival where he first premiered his debut feature, The Life of Jesus, back in 1997. Over the years, he has showcased multiple works in this section, including the 2014 four-part miniseries Li'l Quinquin and the 2017 musical drama Jeannette, the Childhood of Joan of Arc.
Beyond the Directors' Fortnight, Dumont has also competed in Cannes’ main Competition several times, earning the Grand Jury Prize twice: once for the 2006 psychological war drama Flanders, and earlier for the 1999 crime mystery Humanity. His recent films, including the comedies Slack Bay (2016) and France (2021), have also been contenders for the prestigious Palme d'Or.
This year, alongside the screening of Red Rocks, Bruno Dumont is set to conduct a masterclass in the Directors' Fortnight section, offering insights into his extensive career and cinematic approach.
The 58th edition of Directors' Fortnight features a particularly star-studded selection. Notable entries include Reed Van Dyk’s Iraqi war veteran drama Atonement, starring Kenneth Branagh, Hiam Abbass, and Boyd Holbrook; Arie Esiri and Chuko Esiri’s adaptation of Mrs Dalloway, featuring Sophie Okonedo, David Oyelowo, and Ayo Edebiri; as well as Kantemir Balagov’s Butterfly Jam, starring Barry Keoghan and Riley Keough, which will open the sidebar on May 13.
