Mel Brooks announces Spaceballs: The New One! Original cast returns with new stars for the long-awaited sequel to the 1987 sci-fi parody cult classic.
- April 16, 2026
AceShowbiz - Spaceballs fans received exciting news at CinemaCon when legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks announced the official title for the much-anticipated sequel to his 1987 cult classic. The new installment will be called Spaceballs: The New One, dropping the previous joke title speculation of Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.
The announcement was made via a video presentation on Wednesday night at the annual CinemaCon event, which brings together Hollywood studios and exhibitors. Brooks, who directed and co-wrote the original parody of Star Wars, confirmed that several original cast members will return. This includes fan favorites Rick Moranis, George Wyner, Daphne Zuniga, and Bill Pullman, alongside Brooks himself reprising his role.
Adding a fresh dynamic, the sequel introduces new cast members such as Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, and Anthony Carrigan. Notably, Bill Pullman's son, Lewis Pullman—known for his roles in Thunderbolts and Top Gun: Maverick—has joined the project. According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Lewis Pullman will portray the son of his father’s character, Lone Starr, who was originally a Han Solo-inspired figure.
During the CinemaCon presentation, the audience was treated to the first glimpses of the film’s footage. A narrator explained that although the clips shown made little sense out of context, they offered a taste of the movie’s humor and style. One standout moment featured a character resembling a Na'vi from Avatar standing beside Moranis’s character at a urinal, followed by a humorous exchange where Moranis says “I see you” in the Na'vi language.
Josh Greenbaum is directing the sequel, working from a script penned by Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. The film is slated for release on April 23, 2027, under the Amazon MGM Studios banner.
The production team includes notable names such as Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Jeb Brody from Imagine Entertainment, who will be producing alongside Gad, Brooks, and Greenbaum.
Back in 2024, Gad had already hinted at the project’s development on Instagram, expressing enthusiasm for the script and praising his collaborators Samit and Hernandez. He described the experience of working on the film as "heaven on Earth and many other planets as well," emphasizing the comedic promise of the sequel.
CinemaCon, where this announcement took place, is the official convention of Cinema United and runs annually to showcase upcoming films and studio plans to theater owners and press. This year’s event took place from April 13 to April 16.
With the return of original cast members and a fresh ensemble, plus the involvement of Brooks and a talented creative team, Spaceballs: The New One is shaping up to be a highly anticipated addition to the beloved sci-fi parody franchise.
