AceShowbiz - The Flood marks the next ambitious project for filmmaker Zach Cregger, who is once again teaming up with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group's New Line division. Following the success of last year's critically acclaimed horror film, Weapons, Cregger has written and will direct this original science fiction thriller that is rapidly advancing toward an August 11, 2028 release date.
The collaboration reunites Cregger with Weapons producers Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment. Adding notable prestige to the project is the involvement of acclaimed director Steven Spielberg, whose production company Amblin Entertainment is also backing The Flood. Spielberg has been a longtime admirer of Cregger's work and is actively involved in bringing this new vision to the screen.
The announcement of The Flood came toward the end of Warner Bros.’ presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, delivered by studio executives Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy. While details remain scarce, the film is described as a sci-fi thriller set on a distant space station, marking a genre shift for Cregger, whose previous works have primarily been contemporary horror thrillers.
Originally, the project was developed at Netflix before moving to New Line. Richard Brener, president of New Line, expressed enthusiasm about continuing the partnership with Cregger, calling him "the rarest of filmmakers, fluent in every genre he touches." This endorsement highlights the studio’s confidence in Cregger’s versatility and creative vision.
Cregger himself shared his excitement, stating, "I'm incredibly excited to continue my partnership with Mike, Pam, Richard, and the teams at Warner Bros. and New Line. They are true champions of bold creativity, united by a shared ambition to deliver unforgettable theatrical experiences for audiences. That's the dream for any filmmaker."
The success of Weapons set a high bar. The film surged past expectations last August, grossing nearly $270 million worldwide on a modest $38 million budget. It introduced the memorable character Aunt Gladys into popular culture and earned Amy Madigan an Academy Award for her performance. A prequel to Weapons is currently in development, with a release date scheduled for September 8, 2028. While Cregger will not direct the prequel, he is co-writing the script alongside Zach Shields, ensuring a strong creative presence throughout New Line’s slate for 2028.
Spielberg is among the many fans of Weapons. In a rare interview with Empire magazine, the legendary filmmaker praised Cregger’s horror film, revealing it satisfied his personal interest in the genre so completely that it diminished his own desire to produce a horror movie. He said, "When I see a great horror film like Weapons, I don't have an itch I need to scratch... It satisfies me so completely, it actually arrests my desire to someday make a really, really scary movie."
The Flood keeps Cregger closely connected to New Line, where he has also served as a producer on the sci-fi thriller Companion, released in early 2025. Additionally, his next directorial feature, Resident Evil, based on the popular video game franchise, is scheduled for release by Sony in September and is already generating buzz following an intense trailer debut at CinemaCon.
With a strong track record and key industry partnerships, Cregger is positioning himself as a significant creative force in genre filmmaking. His ongoing collaborations with Warner Bros., New Line, and Spielberg signal a promising future of bold, innovative projects set to captivate audiences worldwide.
