AceShowbiz - Marvel is experiencing significant layoffs as part of a broader reduction effort by its parent company, Disney. Sources confirm that both Marvel Entertainment’s New York offices and Marvel Studios in Burbank are affected, with approximately 8% of Marvel’s workforce being let go.
The layoffs span various departments, including film and television production, comics, franchise management, finance, legal, and visual development. Notably, the visual development team has been hit hard, with Marvel Studios choosing to retain only a small core group. This group will primarily handle hiring artists on a project-by-project basis, shifting the bulk of creative work to external contractors moving forward.
This round of cuts comes amid a larger corporate restructuring at Disney. Josh D’Amaro, CEO of Disney, confirmed that up to 1,000 employees across the company will be laid off. The marketing and brand divisions are expected to bear most of the impact from these reductions.
Marvel is not new to layoffs this year, having undergone a smaller reduction earlier in 2024. However, this latest wave appears more extensive, affecting multiple facets of the company’s operations.
Within Marvel, the comics division is among the sectors impacted by the layoffs. The layoffs are part of a broader cost-cutting initiative rather than a targeted editorial overhaul.
