AceShowbiz - The famous Hagstrom Viking II electric guitar played by Elvis Presley during his legendary 1968 comeback special is set to go up for auction. Sotheby's will offer this Swedish-made semi-hollow-body guitar, which Elvis used throughout the landmark television performance on classic tracks such as "Blue Suede Shoes," "Trouble," and "Guitar Man."
In addition to its prominent role in the TV special, the guitar is also featured on the cover of Elvis's 1969 album Elvis in Memphis. Estimated to fetch between $1 million and $2 million, this instrument stands as a symbol of one of the most pivotal moments in rock history.
Craig Inciardi, Sotheby's music and pop culture expert, emphasized the guitar's importance, saying, "This guitar became a symbol of Elvis' legendary comeback." He explained that while guitars have always been central to Elvis's image, the sight of him returning to the stage after several years, clad in his iconic black leather outfit and playing this specific guitar, created an enduring visual legacy that reconnected him with a new generation of fans.
The auction will begin online on Thursday and close on April 23. Prior to the sale, the guitar will be exhibited at Sotheby's New York Breuer Building from April 13 through April 20. Inciardi noted the rarity of this electric Hagstrom model compared to the predominantly acoustic guitars Elvis typically played, highlighting its distinctive look and sound that helped define that historic performance.
Because of its association with the 1968 comeback special and its unique design, this guitar is regarded as one of the most iconic instruments tied to Elvis Presley and his enduring legacy as the King of Rock & Roll.
