AceShowbiz - Baz Luhrmann, acclaimed director of the 2022 biopic Elvis Presley, is set to unveil a remarkable new documentary titled EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert, which showcases never-before-seen footage from the legendary singer’s iconic Las Vegas residency.
Between 1969 and 1976, Elvis Presley performed an unprecedented 636 consecutive sold-out shows at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, a venue that would later be renamed the Las Vegas Hilton and is now known as the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. This residency remains a historic milestone, as the King of Rock ’n’ Roll delivered performances to an estimated 2.5 million fans and generated approximately $43.7 million in ticket sales during that era.
Author Richard Zoglin, who penned Elvis in Vegas, described the residency as a groundbreaking event that brought rock ’n’ roll to the grand Vegas stage. It represented a significant phase late in Presley’s career, concluding just one year prior to his death in 1977.
For those who were not fortunate enough to witness these legendary shows firsthand—whether because they were not yet born or simply unable to attend—Baz Luhrmann offers a unique opportunity to experience the magic through his new documentary. EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert provides audiences with intimate, behind-the-scenes access to the residency, featuring rare and previously unseen film and audio footage.
This documentary builds on Luhrmann’s extensive familiarity with Presley’s life and legacy. His 2022 biopic, Elvis, starred Austin Butler as the iconic singer and Tom Hanks as his controversial manager, Colonel Tom Parker. That film explored Presley’s early years and illuminated the influence of African American artists such as Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup and Big Mama Thornton on his music, including classics like "Hound Dog."
During the production of the 2022 biopic, Luhrmann and his team discovered a treasure trove of archival materials in the Warner Brothers vault. This cache included long-hidden film negatives and footage from the 1970 documentaries Elvis: The Way It Is and Elvis On Tour, as well as rare 8mm home movies and unheard audio recordings of Presley reflecting on his life. Inspired by these finds, Luhrmann chose to self-fund and create EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert to bring this extraordinary material to the public.
The documentary’s soundtrack complements the visuals with a mix of newly remixed classic live recordings and modern reinterpretations. Notable contributions include Jamieson Shaw’s remixes of "In the Ghetto" and "Love Me," along with a PNAU remix of "Don’t Fly Away," offering a fresh sonic experience while honoring Presley’s timeless music.
EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert tickets are currently available through Fandango, with prices varying by theater and location. This release provides a rare glimpse into a pivotal chapter of Presley’s career and invites fans old and new to celebrate the enduring legacy of the King of Rock ’n’ Roll in a theatrical setting.
Through Baz Luhrmann’s visionary direction and access to exclusive archival content, the documentary promises to deepen the public’s appreciation of Elvis Presley as a performer and cultural icon, capturing the energy and spectacle of his legendary Las Vegas residency as never before.
