Kim Novak criticizes Sydney Sweeney's casting in 'Scandalous,' fearing the film will sexualize her real 1950s relationship with Sammy Davis Jr.

AceShowbiz - Kim Novak has openly expressed her disapproval over the casting choice of Sydney Sweeney to portray her in the forthcoming film Scandalous. The movie explores Novak’s relationship with Sammy Davis Jr. during the 1950s and is directed by Colman Domingo in his feature directorial debut. Actor David Jonsson is cast as Davis.
In a recent interview with The Times of London, Novak criticized Sweeney’s casting, emphasizing that she “would never have approved” of the Euphoria star playing her. Novak also remarked that Sweeney “sticks out so much above the waist,” implying a mismatch in portrayal.
The core of Novak’s concern lies in the film’s anticipated focus. She fears that the story will highlight the sexual elements of her relationship with Davis rather than the deeper connection they shared. According to Novak, “there’s no way it wouldn’t be a sexual relationship because Sydney Sweeney looks sexy all the time.” She firmly stated, “She was totally wrong to play me.”
Representatives for Sydney Sweeney did not respond to requests for comment from The Hollywood Reporter as of the article’s publication.
Last year, Sweeney discussed the film and its production during an interview on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast with Scott Feinberg. She explained the process of bringing Colman Domingo on board as director, noting their prior collaboration on Euphoria. Sweeney, who also serves as a producer on Scandalous, expressed her belief that Domingo was uniquely suited to tell this story.
“When I was putting the package together, we were circling different directors. There was one previously attached and I just felt like the story really needed to have a different voice,” she said. “The entire time I was like the only person who would really be able to tell this story and to the degree that it needs to be beautifully told is Colman Domingo.”
Sweeney recounted how she approached Domingo: “So I called him up and I was like, ‘Hey, I don’t know if you even want to direct, but there’s a script that I’d really love to send you. And if you like it, it’s yours. If not, I won’t be offended.’ He read it within like a few hours and he called me back and he was like, ‘This is exactly what I’ve been telling my team I want to find.’ We’ve been putting it together and raising financing - it’s been a labor of love.”
When asked whether she had met Novak, Sweeney did not answer directly but mentioned the positive relationship between Novak and Domingo. “Colman and her have a really beautiful relationship. They’ve been talking. We connected them, so it’s been really cool,” she said.
Scandalous aims to depict the complex and nuanced relationship between Novak and Davis, a story that has generated both anticipation and controversy. With Novak’s vocal reservations and Sweeney’s dedication to the project, the film is shaping up to be a significant and debated portrayal of a notable chapter in entertainment history.
