AceShowbiz - Duffy is set to reveal her harrowing experience of kidnapping and sexual assault in a forthcoming documentary on Disney+. The Welsh artist, who stunned fans in 2020 by disclosing she had been drugged, raped, and held hostage for several weeks, will share her story publicly for the first time through this feature-length film.
The announcement was made by Angela Jain, Disney+’s EMEA content chief, at the Series Mania event. Jain confirmed that the Grammy-winning singer now feels prepared to speak openly about the traumatic events that forced her into a decade-long retreat from the public eye.
At the height of her career in the late 2000s, Duffy was among the world’s top music stars. Her debut album Rockferry achieved multi-platinum status, while the lead single Mercy topped charts internationally. However, shortly after this meteoric rise, she vanished from public view without explanation.
It was only in 2020 that Duffy broke her silence via Instagram, revealing that around ten years earlier she had been drugged, abducted, and taken to another country where she endured severe and violent sexual abuse. This revelation shocked the United Kingdom and shed light on the reason behind her sudden disappearance.
Disney+ describes the documentary as a "retrospective film" that will explore Duffy’s life journey—from her upbringing in Wales to her swift ascent to fame, and ultimately, her withdrawal following the traumatic ordeal. The film promises unprecedented access to the artist herself, complemented by archival footage and interviews with family members, friends, and industry peers who have witnessed her career and personal struggles.
The documentary is being produced by Rare TV with Fernando De Jesus as executive producer alongside Matthew Worthy of Stellify Media. Angela Jain and Sean Doyle, Disney+ executives focusing on unscripted content for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, commissioned the project. Direction will be led by Gill Callan from Northern Ireland.
Sean Doyle emphasized the significance of the documentary, stating that fifteen years ago, Duffy was a global music icon with a distinct and powerful voice. Her hits like Mercy and Warwick Avenue earned her three Brit Awards and a Grammy, marking the peak of her career before she suddenly disappeared.
He added that the film offers Duffy the opportunity to share her story in her own words, highlighting the importance of bringing female-led narratives to the forefront. Doyle praised the sensitivity and care with which Rare TV and Stellify Media have approached this project, stating gratitude for the rare access granted to the artist.
"Above all, I am especially in awe of Duffy—for her honesty and courage to share her story," he remarked.
This documentary promises to be a powerful and intimate examination of Duffy’s life, shedding light on her extraordinary talent as well as the profound personal challenges she has faced. Fans and new audiences alike will soon be able to witness her journey of resilience and recovery when the film debuts on Disney+.
