AceShowbiz - The highly anticipated four-part series adaptation of Lord of the Flies, written by Jack Thorne, is set to debut on Netflix on May 4. The show is based on William Golding’s classic 1954 novel about a group of schoolboys stranded on a remote island following a catastrophic plane crash.
The series takes an innovative approach by dedicating each episode to one of the novel’s central characters: Ralph, Jack, Piggy, and Simon. The cast includes Winston Sawyers as Ralph, Lox Pratt as Jack, David McKenna as Piggy, and Ike Talbut as Simon. This format offers a deeper exploration of each boy’s perspective and experiences on the island.
Originally broadcast on the BBC in the U.K. earlier this year in February, the adaptation is directed by Marc Munden, known for his work on The Mark of Cain and National Treasure. The musical score is composed by the Oscar-winning Hans Zimmer, alongside Kara Talve from Bleeding Fingers Music and Cristobal Tapia de Veer, adding a powerful sonic layer to the storytelling.
On the release of the show, Lox Pratt shared insights with The Hollywood Reporter about his portrayal of Jack. He revealed that director Marc Munden encouraged him to draw inspiration from Malcolm McDowell’s portrayal in A Clockwork Orange to capture Jack’s swagger. Pratt also noted influences from Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders, especially in how Jack physically commands space. The young actor filmed the series in Malaysia, where he developed close bonds with his fellow cast members.
Jack Thorne, best known for his recent work on Adolescence, also serves as president of the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain. His notable credits include writing for the theater production Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, as well as screenplays for Enola Holmes and His Dark Materials.
The production was commissioned by Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, and is a collaboration between Eleven and One Shoe Films, supported by Sony Pictures Television for distribution across BBC iPlayer, BBC One, and Stan. Executive producers include Joel Wilson and Jamie Campbell for Eleven, Jack Thorne for One Shoe Films, Marc Munden, Nawfal Faizullah for the BBC, and Cailah Scobie for Stan.
Filming took place on location in both Malaysia and the U.K., providing authentic tropical island visuals that enhance the narrative’s immersive quality. The adaptation aims to bring a fresh perspective to Golding’s timeless story, combining strong performances with a compelling directorial vision and an evocative score to engage a new generation of viewers.
