AceShowbiz - Michael Stipe has revealed the challenges he faces while completing his long-awaited debut solo album, admitting that the legacy of R.E.M. looms large over the project.
Since releasing his first solo single in 2019, progress on the album has been slow, partly due to the pandemic and partly due to the high standards Stipe sets for himself. In a recent interview with the Times of London, he shared that the main hurdle is living up to the quality of his previous work with R.E.M. “Covid didn’t help, but I’m finishing it,” he said. “When the band split, I just needed a break. I took five years but I got pulled back into music. It’s been a struggle. That’s the main thing. I want it to be great, but I’ve got the pressure of having been in R.E.M. and it’s a high bar, because I want this to be as good as that, and that’s near impossible.”
Stipe still needs to finish writing lyrics for eight songs on the album, which he joked might be called Meet THE Michael Stipe. He hopes to release it by the end of this year, acknowledging that the process has taken longer than anticipated. Despite the delays, 2026 has already brought some exciting moments for fans: he recently performed two R.E.M. tracks during tribute shows featuring Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy, and lent his voice to the theme song for Steve Carell’s new HBO comedy.
While Michael Stipe is slowly rounding the bases on his solo career, fans remain hopeful that he will eventually join forces again with former bandmates Mike Mills and Peter Buck, who have formed their own baseball-themed band. For now, the pressure to deliver a solo album that can stand alongside the legacy of R.E.M. remains a significant challenge for the iconic singer.
