AceShowbiz - Timothée Chalamet found himself at the center of controversy on The View after his recent remarks about ballet and opera sparked backlash from the hosts.
During a town hall event with Matthew McConaughey, Chalamet expressed mixed feelings about supporting movies in theaters and contrasted that with his reluctance to engage in ballet or opera. He described those art forms as efforts to “keep this thing alive even though no one cares about this thing anymore.”
Sarah Haines reminded the panel and viewers that Chalamet comes from a family deeply involved in ballet, noting his grandmother, mother, and sister all participated in the New York City Ballet. She lightheartedly commented, “This seems like a family issue.”
Sunny Hostin, a member of the Dance Theatre of Harlem, voiced her disappointment and offense at Chalamet’s comments. She called his remarks “vapid” and “shallow,” emphasizing the hurt they caused given her connection to classical ballet.
Whoopi Goldberg strongly criticized Chalamet for disparaging the arts while attempting to be humorous, suggesting his comments might have cost him “14 cents.” She highlighted the personal nature of his attack, saying, “You come from a dance family. And so, when you crap on somebody else’s art form, it doesn’t feel good.”
Goldberg also addressed Chalamet directly, calling him “boy” with a disclaimer of “no disrespect,” mirroring how he had spoken during the town hall. She warned him to be careful with his words, especially when provoking anger from passionate fans.
She further condemned his attempt to soften the insult by saying “no disrespect,” stating, “That’s absolute disrespect!” and advised against apologizing when an insult had already been made, as it undermines sincerity.
The exchange highlighted tensions around supporting traditional arts and the sensitivity surrounding public remarks from prominent figures like Chalamet, especially given his family's strong ties to ballet.
