AceShowbiz - Mo'Nique reignited a years-old dispute with Whoopi Goldberg by posting a detailed open letter on Instagram, nearly eight years after their tense exchange on The View. The actress and comedian addressed her former co-host directly, questioning whether her feelings about their confrontation had evolved over time.
Mo'Nique revealed that she was prompted to write the letter after witnessing a shift in the tone of comments made by Goldberg on the show recently. She observed that the current public sentiment appears more aligned with her perspective, particularly regarding her choice not to work for entities to whom she felt no obligation.
“I'm encouraged to send you this open letter after recently seeing the video of our last conversation on your show,” Mo'Nique wrote. She noted the contrast between the energy of the discussion eight years ago and the present, asking Goldberg, “Have your feelings changed since that time?”
In her message, Mo'Nique also brought up an incident involving Goldberg from 1993, when there was an attempt to sue her over the film Theodore Rex. It was alleged Goldberg had verbally committed to the project but later denied it. Mo'Nique expressed confusion over this, especially since she had explained her only contractual obligation was to director Lee Daniels. Despite this, Goldberg had maintained she could have “schooled” Mo'Nique on fulfilling expectations.
The original clash stemmed from a 2018 episode of The View, during which Goldberg criticized Mo'Nique for refusing to promote the 2009 film Precious overseas. Goldberg suggested she could have “schooled” Mo'Nique on her contractual duties, a claim that Mo'Nique strongly disputed by pointing out that if she had breached her contract, she would have been sued.
Additionally, Mo'Nique called out Tyler Perry, one of the producers of Precious, accusing him of failing to publicly correct the narrative that she is difficult to work with, despite him admitting in audio recordings that he was wrong to say so. She stated, “People like Tyler Perry refused to take responsibility, while I had to take responsibility for refusing to sign up for an act of slavery against my will.”
Mo'Nique expressed deep disappointment that another woman had publicly chastised her on a platform designed to empower women. She questioned whether Goldberg’s stance had been influenced by her professional relationships, including ties to former Executive Producer Candi Carter and Oprah Winfrey, who was an executive producer on Precious, as well as Tyler Perry.
“But what is interesting is hearing you now speak about the importance of standing up for what's right,” Mo'Nique wrote. “My question is: Is your stance truly about standing up against wrong or is it about standing with the ‘right people’?”
Before concluding, she asked if Goldberg still believed she had “schooled” her correctly. Mo'Nique warned that admitting any fault might mean going against powerful allies and questioned whether Goldberg would stand up for the next generation of women or continue to dismiss them.
“I look forward to finding out. Because I was the little girl coming behind you,” she concluded.
As of now, representatives for Goldberg have not responded to requests for comment from TheWrap regarding the letter.
