AceShowbiz - Matt Dillon has been officially announced as the lead star in Amazon's upcoming eight-part series remake of the classic Western The Magnificent Seven. The original film, directed by John Sturges and released in 1960, starred Steve McQueen and was itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. Over the years, the story has seen multiple sequels and a 2016 remake by Antoine Fuqua featuring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt.
This new adaptation will stream on MGM+ and features Matt Dillon not only as the lead actor but also as an executive producer. Dillon will portray the character Chris Adams, a role famously played by Yul Brynner in the original movie. In the 2016 film, Washington’s character served as a spiritual successor to Chris. The character of Chris Adams is described as a “Stoic, steady under pressure, and with an unflinching gaze that does most of the talking for him.” He is known for his strict moral code grounded in fairness and restraint, and his intolerance for hypocrisy or cruelty.
The story centers on seven skilled gunslingers who unite to defend a small village from a ruthless mercenary landowner. This new series promises to expand on the original narrative by exploring deeper backstories and contemporary themes across its eight episodes.
Michael Wright, MGM+’s global head, expressed enthusiasm about Dillon joining the project, noting the actor’s ability to portray complex and morally conflicted characters. Wright highlighted that the series will honor the legacy of the original film while addressing timeless themes such as courage, redemption, and resistance to oppression. He emphasized that Dillon’s performance will be central to bringing this vision to life.
Created by Tim Kring, the series aims to provide a fresh take on the iconic Western genre, offering viewers a more detailed and nuanced look at the characters and their motivations. With its rich storytelling potential, the series looks poised to attract both longtime fans of the franchise and new audiences alike.
