Panned Henry Cavill thriller, Night Hunter, is a surprise global hit on Paramount+ six years later, hitting #4. Streaming gives it a second chance!

AceShowbiz - An overlooked and widely panned thriller starring Henry Cavill, Night Hunter, is surprisingly finding a significant second life on streaming, nearly six years after its initial release. This crime drama has recently climbed into the streaming charts, securing the No. 4 spot on Paramount+’s Top Movies globally. Its unexpected resurgence highlights streaming's power to grant new audiences to previously struggling films.
When Night Hunter debuted in 2019, it struggled significantly, hampered by limited promotion and an underwhelming theatrical rollout. Initially released as Nomis at the LA Film Festival in 2018, it was later retitled for wider distribution. Despite a decent cast, including Ben Kingsley, Alexandra Daddario, and Stanley Tucci, the movie failed to generate meaningful box office numbers. Its production budget is unknown, but Night Hunter is estimated to have collected only $1 million worldwide, signaling a commercial disappointment.
The critical reception for Night Hunter was equally unfavorable, with its Rotten Tomatoes scores remaining low: 14% from critics and a 50% audience score. Directed by David Raymond, the film follows a hardened police lieutenant entangled in a dangerous investigation involving a suspected serial predator. The story leans heavily into psychological tension, but its grim tone and uneven execution made it difficult to stand out in a genre already saturated with similar films at the time.
While Night Hunter is only now gaining an audience on streaming, Henry Cavill’s career has moved in a very different direction since the film’s release. In the years that followed, the actor strategically transitioned away from smaller thrillers, embracing franchise-led projects with long-term plans. These include his popular roles in Netflix’s The Witcher, and as Sherlock Holmes in the Enola Holmes and Enola Holmes 2 films, cementing his status in major cinematic universes.
Cavill continues to expand his portfolio, currently developing a live-action cinematic universe with Amazon MGM Studios based on the popular tabletop game Warhammer 40,000, where he is set to star and executive produce. This ambitious project envisions humanity on the brink of extinction in a grim, far-future dystopia, battling alien races and demonic threats. Additionally, Cavill remains linked to the long-in-development Highlander reboot, directed by Chad Stahelski, a project that faced delays after the actor sustained an injury during training in late 2025.
