AceShowbiz - The horror genre continues to thrive under the visionary direction of Osgood Perkins, who follows up the viral success of Longlegs and his recent Stephen King adaptation, The Monkey, with one of his most audacious films yet. Much like his previous works, the marketing for Keeper was shrouded in mystery, revealing little beyond its premise: a young woman named Liz (played by the phenomenal Tatiana Maslany) embarks on a romantic cabin getaway with her boyfriend, Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland). However, as is characteristic of a Perkins film, this idyllic setup quickly devolves into a nightmarish reality, leading to one of the most shocking conclusions in recent horror memory.
Throughout much of Keeper's runtime, Liz finds herself tormented by a series of bizarre and unsettling occurrences. She experiences an inexplicable urge to consume a chocolate-flavored cake she despises, compulsively draws eerie figures with screaming faces, and is plagued by visions of mysterious women and grotesque creatures. Tatiana Maslany, known for her transformative roles in Orphan Black and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, delivers another masterclass performance. Her portrayal brilliantly keeps the audience questioning whether Liz's terrifying experiences are genuinely supernatural or merely manifestations of her own unraveling mind. This ambiguity is a hallmark of Perkins' style, drawing viewers deeper into the psychological torment.
The film's climax, however, shatters any lingering doubts, finally peeling back the layers of deception to reveal the terrifying truth lurking within the seemingly romantic cabin. In a twist reminiscent of films like mother! and Companion, Malcolm is exposed as anything but the loving partner he pretends to be. His sinister intentions go far beyond merely drugging Liz with the cake to knock her out. It's revealed he is neither a doctor nor an unfaithful husband, but rather a horrifyingly ancient being, over 200 years old, who has been luring unsuspecting women to his secluded abode for centuries.
The explanation for Malcolm's unnatural longevity and predatory behavior lies in a chilling flashback. As a young boy, he and his cousin (played by Birkett Turton) stumbled upon a pregnant woman trespassing on their property. Crucially, this woman bears an uncanny resemblance to Liz. Young Malcolm ruthlessly shoots her with a musket and disposes of her body in a pig pen. That very night, Malcolm and his cousin witness the woman giving birth, an event far from any immaculate conception. The scene is marked by a smoking umbilical cord and blood-stained footprints smeared on the wall, hinting at something deeply unnatural. The barely conscious woman's eyes turn pitch black, confirming her supernatural connection before young Malcolm delivers a final, fatal gunshot.
Despite the apparent eradication of the witch, the film makes it clear that her offspring were very much still at large, a lingering threat that has haunted Malcolm's existence and fueled his dark purpose for centuries. This revelation leaves a chilling uncertainty about Liz's ultimate fate and the true extent of the supernatural menace that continues to lurk in the shadows of Keeper's terrifying world.
