Rick Flag Sr.'s heel turn in Peacemaker S2 is baffling. Dive into the theory connecting his actions to Creature Commandos and a major DCU storyline.

AceShowbiz - A significant point of contention following the latest developments in the DCU has been the surprising heel turn of Rick Flag Sr. in Peacemaker season 2. While his actions have left many viewers confused, a compelling theory suggests there's a deeper narrative at play, hinting at a major upcoming DCU storyline. Portrayed by Frank Grillo, Rick Flag Sr. has assumed command of ARGUS, taking over from the formidable Amanda Waller. However, his decisions in Peacemaker season 2, set in 2025, appear starkly out of character when compared to his introduction in 2024's Creature Commandos.
In Creature Commandos, Rick Flag Sr. was tasked with leading Task Force M, a clandestine unit composed of 'monster metas' who, by technicality, couldn't be classified as human. This clever legal maneuver allowed Amanda Waller to deploy incarcerated metahumans into the field, sidestepping legal restrictions after her program's public exposure. During this period, Flag worked closely with a diverse team including The Bride, Weasel, Doctor Phosphorus, G.I. Robot, and Nina Mazursky, even collaborating with Eric Frankenstein.
His next appearance was in James Gunn's Superman, where he was seen running ARGUS. Here, Flag expressed discomfort with the government's decision to allow Lex Luthor's PlanetWatch to take Superman into custody. Furthermore, by the conclusion of Superman, his arc showed growing concern over the increasing power and influence of metas, particularly after the Justice Gang's interference in the Boravian invasion of Jarhanpur, which tragically resulted in Hawkgirl killing the Boravian president.
Despite these established concerns, Rick Flag Sr.'s behavior in Peacemaker season 2 feels undeniably perplexing. His vendetta against Chris Smith (Peacemaker) is, of course, entirely understandable, given that Peacemaker followed Waller's orders to kill Flag's son, Rick Flag Jr., in The Suicide Squad. The truly shocking and seemingly uncharacteristic heel turn, however, occurs when Flag aligns ARGUS with LuthorCorp. Their objective? To gain interdimensional access to a (presumably) uninhabitable world, intended as an exile for rogue metas.
This alliance takes a disturbing turn as Flag shows a callous disregard for human life, sacrificing multiple ARGUS agents in his relentless pursuit of the correct doorway. Using Peacemaker's confiscated Quantum Unfolding Chamber, his determination to find this alternate dimension, regardless of the cost, paints a picture of a man radically different from the one we thought we knew. This drastic shift in character suggests that his actions are not merely a personal vendetta, but potentially a calculated move within a much larger, unfolding narrative in the DCU.
