AceShowbiz - Director Joseph Kosinski, joined by a star-studded panel including actors Brad Pitt and Damson Idris, along with producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Lewis Hamilton, recently reflected on the groundbreaking production of their upcoming racing film. During a post-screening panel discussion for F1: The Movie, hosted by SAG Foundation national director and BAFTA board member Rochelle Rose, the creatives delved into the innovative, yet intensely challenging, process behind the summer blockbuster. Kosinski candidly admitted, “Looking back, I think, ‘God, that was pretty reckless.’â€
The director’s striking confession stemmed from the demanding nature of shooting F1: The Movie. Production involved numerous long and turbulent days spent at actual Formula 1 Grand Prix events, where extreme stunts were executed entirely in-camera. This approach, while delivering unparalleled authenticity, presented unique logistical hurdles. “Normally, when you’re shooting a scene, you have hours or days to shoot it,†Kosinski explained, “but because we wanted to shoot this film live at the Grand Prix while the events are going on, we’d often only get a few minutes.â€
This severe time constraint forced the cast and crew to operate with incredible efficiency and precision. Kosinski recalled moments where he would instruct Pitt and Idris, “We’ll be lucky to get three takes at this,†particularly highlighting the challenging opening sequence shot at Silverstone. He further illustrated the pressure, revealing, “We actually shot three scenes back-to-back in about 15 minutes.†This glimpse into the production underscores the commitment to realism that defines F1: The Movie, pushing the boundaries of filmmaking to capture the visceral thrill of real-world racing.
