In the whirlwind of controversies surrounding Aimee Lou Wood parody, 'Saturday Night Live' comic Bowen Yang speaks out to address the boundaries of humor and insensitivity.

AceShowbiz - The third season of HBO's "The White Lotus saw Aimee Lou Wood shining brightly as Chelsea, a character that quickly become fan's favorite amid the show's thick plotline featuring wild twists. However, the past few weeks have diverted the spotlight from her performance to a different matter altogether: her teeth.

During a parody sketch titled "The White POTUS," aired on an April 12 episode of "Saturday Night Live", Sarah Sherman's exaggerated prosthetics mimicking Wood's gap teeth offended the actress, who called the sketch "mean" and "unfunny."

Reflecting on Wood's sentiments, "SNL" star Bowen Yang acknowledged her reaction as "completely valid." When interviewed by Extra, Yang remarked the line between humor and insensitivity, "With parody, you kind of forget the sort of human, emotional cost that it sort of extols on someone."

Wood emphasized that while she doesn't consider herself "thin-skinned," she felt unfairly targeted as the sole person mocked in the five-minute sketch. However, she clarified that she just hated "the concept" but didn't blame Sherman.

She has since received personal apologies from the "SNL" team and got flowers from Sherman herself although there wasn't any public apology.

Bowen Yang drew silver lining in Aimee Lou Wood's outcry, "You need those reminders every now and then that parody can go too far sometimes, and that we as comedians can take account for that."

As "SNL" continues to deliver its brand of cutting-edge satire, the narrative surrounding Wood's portrayal will undoubtedly prompt further reflection among its writers and performers. Whether the show chooses to address the controversy in upcoming episodes remains to be seen.

Tune in on May 3 to catch "Abbott Elementary" actress Quinta Brunson hosting, with Benson Boone as the musical guest, streaming on NBC and Peacock.
