AceShowbiz - Bobby Brown did not hold back his feelings about Britney Spears' 2004 cover of his song "My Prerogative." During a recent appearance on Shannon Sharpe's podcast, "Club Shay Shay", the former New Edition star expressed his disapproval, stating unequivocally that Spears had "butchered" the song.
"I don't think they really did justice to any of the samples that they have done to my songs. Britney Spears butchered 'My Prerogative', " Brown told Sharpe. "Teddy Riley produced it, but that was a butchering that, you know, I couldn't take it."
Brown admitted he gave his blessing when Britney sought permission to re-record the song, but he said he did so with the expectation that her version would do the original song justice. "I cleared it only because it was Britney Spears, and I was thinking... Teddy Riley is doing it too," he explained.
However, the result did not live up to his expectations, leading Brown to adopt a more cautious approach to allowing his music to be covered in the future. "I gotta hear it [in order for it to be cleared] because you don't know what these kids will say these days," Brown said, emphasizing his concern over the potential misuse of his songs.
Fans and critics alike have been vocal about Brown's comments. Britney's fans especially argued that her version added a unique touch, distinguishing it from the original.
One fan tweeted, "Bobby Brown really said Britney Spears butchered 'Prerogative' despite him clearing the song. I DISAGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY." Another noted, "Listen, I get it. I would also be mad if someone did a cover of my song and did it so much better than I did that everyone thought my song was theirs."
Spears' cover of "My Prerogative," released as part of her "Greatest Hits: My Prerogative" album, featured modern R&B elements and a female perspective. Despite Brown's criticism, the cover was a commercial success and introduced a new generation to the iconic track.
