AceShowbiz - In an exciting revelation at this year's CinemaCon, Universal Pictures confirmed that a live-action sequel to the upcoming "How to Train Your Dragon" remake. The second movie is set to fly into theaters on June 11, 2027, two years after the first one hits cinemas on June 13 this year.
Director Dean DeBlois will return for this sequel. "We are so excited to give your theaters a big summer title in two years' time," he exclaimed as he took the stage along with cast members Gerard Butler, Mason Thames, and Nico Parker.
"How to Train Your Dragon" follows the journey of Hiccup, a scrawny Viking teen, and his unlikely bond with an injured dragon named Toothless. Together, they defy long-standing traditions of enmity between Vikings and dragons.
The sequel, set five years after the original, will explore new depths in their friendship as Hiccup, now 20 years old, alongside his friends, battles a madman intent on conquering the world with a dragon army.
The live-action adaptation benefits from DeBlois' seasoned direction, having previously helmed all three films in the original DreamWorks Animation trilogy. The animated series has been immensely successful, grossing a total of $1.65 billion globally and earning four Oscar nominations.
DeBlois aims to enrich the live-action series by deepening character relationships and expanding on the mythologies introduced in the animated versions.
During the CinemaCon event, DeBlois also touched upon the challenges faced during the production of the animated film and expressed excitement about the opportunities to explore untapped aspects of the story.
"It's a reimagining that holds quite faithful to the story and yet finds moments where we could enrich character relationships, give a bit of depth, give a little bit of mythology that might have been lacking in that original," he mentioned.
Fans of the franchise and new viewers alike have much to look forward to as Universal Pictures prepares to take them back to the mythical village of Berk. With DeBlois at the helm and a talented cast, the live-action "How to Train Your Dragon" series promises to be a cinematic experience that will enchant and thrill audiences of all ages.
