AceShowbiz - More than two decades after Sarah Michelle Gellar last wielded a wooden stake as Buffy Summers, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is on the cusp of a highly anticipated revival at Hulu. The new series promises to explore "the next chapter in the Buffyverse," focusing on a new Slayer who will step into the spotlight while Gellar returns in a recurring role.
The revival has garnered significant attention, not least because of the stellar team behind it. Nora and Lilla Zuckerman are set to write and executive produce the series, with Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao helming the pilot and also serving as an executive producer. They are joined by Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton - names that will be familiar to long-time fans as they all had pivotal roles in the original series' production.
"It's funny, I always used to say no, because it's in its bubble and it's so perfect," Gellar shared during a press interview, "Eealizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, 'Well, maybe.' "
Gellar's shift in perspective has been partly influenced by her recent involvement in the "Dexter" prequel "Dexter: Original Sin", where she experienced the excitement of fans eager to dive back into a beloved story. "I've had long talks with Michael C. Hall too about it… sometimes there are more stories to tell and there are other ways," she revealed to Entertainment Weekly.
The original "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series, which premiered in 1997, was celebrated for its sharp wit, complex characters, and revolutionary portrayal of a strong female lead. Spanning seven seasons, it remains a cultural touchstone with a dedicated fan base, even flourishing through spinoff series, comic books, and a recent audiobook sequel featuring many original cast members.
However, one notable absence from this revival will be Joss Whedon, the creator of the original series. Whedon, who has faced accusations of misconduct and creating a toxic work environment, will not be involved in the new project - something Gellar and other original cast members have publicly supported.
The Hulu-backed revival aims to breathe new life into the Buffyverse, drawing from the rich narrative depth that made the original so beloved. As excitement builds, fans are eager to see how the essence of the original series will be interwoven with the fresh arcs and character developments that the new installment promises to deliver.
For the latest updates on the revival, fans can stream every episode of the original "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" on Stan, and stay tuned to Hulu for the official pilot order announcement.
