AceShowbiz - Despite already deleting her Twitter/X page, Oscar-nominated actress Karla Sofia Gascon continues to face intense criticism as more damaging tweets from her past emerged while the Academy Awards are coming closer.
Among the newly-resurfaced problematic messages she posted on the internet was from 2020 and aimed at Adele. In her tweet, she body-shamed the "Easy on Me" singer following the latter's weight-loss journey.
"COVID passed, and she went overboard with the sleeves, or she went under the knife and they didn't remove the skin from her arms @Adele," she wrote while sharing a picture of Adele post-weight loss.
The backlash especially from Adele's fans was swift with calls for The Academy to "cancel" Gascon's nomination.
This is just one of the many controversial posts shared by the actress in the past few years. Others included derogatory comments about Islam, criticism of the George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter movement, and mocking remarks about the diversity of the 2021 Oscars.
The "Emilia Perez" actress has since issued an apology, stating, "I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness."
Besides deactivating her Twitter account which automatically erased all her posts including the controversial ones, Gascon turned off comments on Instagram, citing online harassment and death threats while insisting she had always "defended each and every one of the minorities in this world."
Fellow Oscar nominee and movie co-star Zoe Saldana felt sad over the situation, stating, "It saddens me because I don't support [it], and I don't have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group."
When the Oscars nominations were first announced, Gascon was celebrated for breaking the barriers by becoming the first-ever trans actor to get nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars. However, her historic nomination has now been overshadowed by public outcry.
