AceShowbiz - Reese Witherspoon, known for her iconic role in "Legally Blonde," recently opened up about a cringe-worthy mistake that still haunts her. The actress, now 48, recounted how she unintentionally ruined a friendship with a fellow "proper actress" during a public awards ceremony.
Promoting her new rom-com, "You're Cordially Invited," with co-star Will Ferrell, Witherspoon shared the mishap during an interview with People. "I think she doesn't like me anymore," Witherspoon confessed, explaining that the incident soured their relationship.
During a British awards ceremony that was described as "elegant" and "classy," Witherspoon was tasked with presenting an award to this serious actress. However, unfamiliar with the formal tone of the ceremony, she mistakenly treated it like a comedy roast. "So I got up and I roasted her," she recalled.
"I was like, 'Remember the time we got laser hair removal?' " Witherspoon shared, confessing that her attempt at humor was disastrously misplaced.
Reflecting on the incident, Witherspoon noted, "I thought it was so funny and it was just, I had the wrong audience. It was pretty bad." Despite her mistake, she managed to laugh about it eventually although the friendship couldn't be salvaged.
The faux pas led to the friend cutting ties with Witherspoon. "We're not friends anymore. I'm not even kidding - we're not friends anymore," she said, admitting that the memory still embarrasses her. "It literally haunts me."
Witherspoon didn't name the actress, but she once did an impersonation of Nicole Kidman's Australian accent when presenting Kidman's AFI Lifetime Achievement Award.
Reese Witherspoon's anecdote serves as a light-hearted reminder of the importance of reading the room, especially in professional settings. It's a testament to the unpredictable nature of live events and the delicate balance of humor and decorum.
