Lionsgate's action-packed 'Den of Thieves 2: Pantera' has claimed the number one spot at the domestic box office, triumphing over Disney's family-friendly 'Mufasa: The Lion King.'

AceShowbiz - "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera", the sequel to the 2018 heist thriller starring Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr., grossed $15.5 million over the weekend, narrowly surpassing "Mufasa," which pulled in $13.2 million. This achievement marks Lionsgate's first number one opening since November's "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes."

Mid-January is typically a slow period for moviegoing, and this trend was exacerbated by the closures of about 10 theaters in Los Angeles due to ongoing wildfires. Nevertheless, "Den of Thieves 2" performed similarly to its predecessor and managed to attract audiences despite mixed reviews. While it garnered a "B+" CinemaScore, it received a moderate 58% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Disney's "Mufasa: The Lion King," directed by Barry Jenkins, continues to show strong numbers, having accumulated $539.7 million globally in just four weeks. Another box office heavyweight, "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," also in its fourth week, added $11 million to its $204.5 million cumulative domestic gross.

Not far behind, Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu," celebrated for its lush historical horror aesthetics, maintained its fourth-place position with $6.8 million, bringing its domestic total to $81.8 million. "Moana 2" rounded out the top five with $6.5 million, inching closer to the $1 billion global mark.

Further down the charts, the Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown" and the Broadway adaptation "Wicked" both vied for the sixth spot with $5 million each. Meanwhile, A24's "Babygirl" and newcomers "Game Changer" and "The Last Showgirl" filled out the remainder of the top ten.

Internationally, "Mufasa" dominated with a $41 million weekend gross, followed by "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" with $31 million, "Nosferatu" with $20.5 million, and "Den of Thieves 2" just missing the top three globally with $19.7 million. Chinese releases also made a splash, with "Octopus with Broken Arms," "Big World," and "Honey Money Phony" making the global top ten.

As we look towards the future, the upcoming slate of releases includes potential contenders like Leigh Whannell's "Wolf Man," the buddy comedy "One of Them Days," and the award-oriented dramas "I'm Still Here" and "Sing Sing." With no clear tentpole releases on the horizon, the box office is anyone's game.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters:

  1. "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera," $15.5 million.
  2. "Mufasa: The Lion King," $13.2 million.
  3. "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," $11 million.
  4. "Nosferatu," $6.8 million.
