AceShowbiz - Jean Smart sends a heartfelt plea to TV networks planning to air Hollywood award shows following the Los Angeles fires. In an Instagram post late Wednesday night, January 8, Smart strongly urged networks to "seriously consider" canceling the telecasts and instead donating the funds they would have earned to fire victims and first responders.
"Attention! With ALL due respect, during Hollywood's season of celebration, I hope any of the networks televising the upcoming awards will seriously consider NOT televising them and donating the revenue they would have garnered to victims of the fires and the firefighters," wrote Smart.
Smart's post likely refers to events like the Academy Awards, the Critics Choice Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, set to be broadcast by ABC, E Network, and Netflix, respectively.
The wildfires have significantly impacted awards season preparations. The SAG Awards canceled their live nominations announcement and released nominees via a press release while the Academy Awards voting deadline has been extended from January 12 to January 14. The Critics Choice Awards ceremony has also been postponed from January 12 to January 26.
Beyond award shows, several films have canceled their red carpet premieres due to the fires and multiple TV production halted filming. Other events, such as the BAFTA Tea Party and the AARP's Movies for Grownups, have been postponed.
Smart's plea comes amid a worsening fire situation in Los Angeles. The Palisades fire is raging uncontrollably, and nearly 2,000 structures have been burned in the past 48 hours. Five people have died, and several firefighters have been injured.
Several celebrities have expressed support for Smart's message on Instagram while production on shows like "Genaral Hospital" added trigger warning amid the catastrophe.
Smart herself won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series for her performance in "Hacks" just days before the fires broke out.
