AceShowbiz - Scorpions drummer Mikkey Dee has had a rough holiday season, as he revealed that he spent the majority of it hospitalized with a severe sepsis infection. In a heartfelt social media post on January 2, the 61-year-old musician informed fans that he had been in the hospital for three weeks and had undergone multiple operations.
"This holiday season, I have been hospitalized with a very serious blood infection (Sepsis)," the former Motorhead member wrote. "I was admitted for three weeks but now I am home fighting this bastard bacteria."
Dee expressed immense gratitude towards the medical staff at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in his hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden, stating, "Thankfully, I have received fantastic care at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, my hometown." He praised the doctors and nurses for their exceptional care during this difficult time.
Elaborating on his condition, Dee told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet that the medical scare started with a sprained ankle. What initially seemed like a minor injury quickly escalated into a serious infection as his ankle swelled and appeared abnormal.
"The ankle swelled up like hell, then it took on a weird shape and appearance and looked like an overcooked ham," Dee said. His condition deteriorated to the point that he needed urgent medical intervention. "It was surgery right away, the first of three. They cut away what was dead and infected and badly infested. It was not a good journey I was on," he recalled.
Sepsis is a severe medical condition where the body's response to an infection becomes extreme, causing organs to function poorly. Signs of sepsis include vomiting, confusion, rash, and difficulty breathing.
Dee's quick diagnosis and treatment were crucial in his recovery. "Another day and I'd be playing drums with [late Motörhead frontman] Lemmy in heaven," he added, highlighting the severity of his condition.
Despite the challenges, Dee's spirits remain high as he looks forward to rejoining his band for their 2025 tour. "Now I'm working 100 percent to be back on the drum stool for the Residency that starts off in Las Vegas on February 27. We have a tremendous 2025 to look forward to, celebrating 60 years of Scorpions and many exciting gigs around the world."
The Las Vegas residency is scheduled from February 27 through March 11 at PH Live at Planet Hollywood, setting the stage for a jubilant celebration of Scorpions' 60th anniversary. Dee signed off with an enthusiastic message to fans, "So, the Stinger is out and I can't wait to see you all out there on the road and rock the hell out of you! I wish everybody a fantastic 2025 with good health and lots of Rock n' Roll!"
