AceShowbiz - Saafir, born Reggie Gibson, passed away on November 19 at the age of 54. As per a death certificate, his death was a result of septic shock, enterocolitis (an infection in the small intestine or colon), and an infected sacral decubitus (bedsore) toward his lower spine.
Saafir's health issues began in 1992 when he was injured in a plane crash. The injuries he sustained led to a cancerous tumor being removed from his spine in 2005. Though the surgery prevented paralysis, it impaired his mobility.
Compounding his spinal issues, Saafir was involved in a subsequent series of accidents and falls over the years. He often performed in a wheelchair, a condition he attributed to inadequate health insurance coverage for treatments that could have helped him regain mobility.
Throughout his career, Saafir achieved recognition in West Coast rap as a member of the Golden State Project, Digital Underground, and Hobo Junction. His collaboration with Quincy Jones on "The Boxcar Sessions" blended jazz and hip-hop.
Despite his health challenges, Saafir remained musically active, releasing several solo albums. His passing was mourned by his son, rapper Lil Saafir, and former groupmate Xzibit, who remembered him as "The Saucee Nomad."
In a tribute to his father, Lil Saafir expressed his admiration for his unwavering determination and passion for hip-hop. He vowed to continue his legacy, carrying on his vision for profound greatness and inspiration.
