AceShowbiz - Nicole Kidman has long been celebrated for her immersive acting style, but it appears this dedication comes at a significant cost. During various interviews, the Oscar-winning actress has been candid about the physical and emotional toll that portraying emotionally charged characters has taken on her.
Kidman, 57, discussed the impact of playing Celeste on HBO's "Big Little Lies" and Romy in the upcoming erotic thriller "Babygirl". Both roles required her to delve deep into her character's psyche, often blurring the lines between reality and fiction. "That was disturbing to my body and my psyche because I couldn’t tell what was real and what wasn't," Kidman shared about her experience filming "Big Little Lies".
The actress explained how the physical demands led to "real bruises all over my back and body," causing her brain to signal real pain. "So, I do, sort of these things that clean my chakras and pray and do all of this, you know, and get out the sage," she said, emphasizing her need to find ways to restore herself.
Kidman's experience on the set of "Babygirl" was similarly taxing. The movie, which explores themes of power and intimacy, sees her playing a high-powered CEO who embarks on a steamy affair with a young intern. Kidman found parts of the film exhausted yet emotionally disturbed her, stating, "There were parts of 'Babygirl' that are not now in the film but that fed onto it that we shot that kind of, yeah, just after a period, it was exhausting."
Both roles required Kidman to push her emotional limits, often leaving her feeling vulnerable and exposed. "So you're putting yourself through the trauma," she explained in an interview with Variety. "On Babygirl, there were parts that are now not in the film that we shot that gave me-it was exhausting, but it was also just emotionally disturbing."
Kidman emphasized the importance of self-care and finding a balance between her dedication to her art and her well-being. "I'm still learning not to sacrifice my body for the sake of the art, because part of me wants to," Kidman admitted. She acknowledged the journey of weighing her professional commitment against personal health.
Despite these challenges, Kidman remains passionate about exploring complex, female-centric narratives. "A lot of times women are discarded at a certain period of their career as a sexual being. So, it was really beautiful to be seen in this way," she noted about her role in "Babygirl".
