"18 years ago today, this photo became the moment that defined an era," Hilton wrote on Instagram. "The Holy Trinity. Instantly iconic," she captioned the post, referring to herself, Spears, and Lohan.
Despite the smiles in the photograph, Hilton later revealed that the moment was somewhat awkward due to ongoing tension with Lohan. In a 2021 episode of her "This is Paris" podcast, Hilton explained that paparazzi had confronted her about a video in which Lohan alleged she had been hit by Hilton.
"We were walking to the car and all of a sudden we got swarmed by tons of paparazzi," said Hilton. As she approached the car with Spears, Lindsay "[came] up. It was kind of awkward because we were having some drama." Hilton then inquired with Lohan about the video, who denied hitting her.
Hilton noted that they had been close friends but had experienced a falling out. She attributed the drama to their youth and the media's influence at the time.
Despite the past tension, Hilton and Lohan have since reconciled. In 2024, Hilton revealed that they had reconnected at the Vanity Fair Oscars party. She also shared her admiration for Spears, who she described as a loving and supportive friend who enjoys dancing with her son, Phoenix.
