AceShowbiz - Sophie Turner, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in the hit series "Game of Thrones," is close to finalizing a deal to star as Lara Croft in Amazon MGM Studios' upcoming adaptation of the popular video game "Tomb Raider." While the deal has yet to be officially closed, it is expected to be completed soon.
The live-action series has garnered much attention, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator of "Fleabag," writing and executive producing the project.
Angelina Jolie first donned Lara Croft's signature braid in films released in 2001 and 2003, followed by Alicia Vikander's portrayal in the 2018 adaptation. This new series marks the first time Lara Croft will come to life in a live-action TV series, a step that Phoebe Waller-Bridge is particularly excited about. "Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can't wait to go on this adventure. Bats 'n all," she shared when the series order was announced in May.
The selection process for the role was competitive, with several British actresses, including Emma Mackey ("Sex Education") and Lucy Boynton ("Bohemian Rhapsody"), and Mackenzie Davis ("Station Eleven") being considered. Ultimately, it appears that Turner has emerged as the frontrunner.
Apart from her famed role on "Game of Thrones", Turner has appeared in various other projects, such as "X-Men: Apocalypse" and "X-Men: Dark Phoenix," portraying Jean Grey. More recently, she starred in the ITV/CW miniseries "Joan," the Max limited series "The Staircase," and Netflix's "Do Revenge." She is also set to feature in Prime Video's upcoming thriller "Haven."
In addition to the TV series, Amazon MGM is betting big on the "Tomb Raider" franchise by developing a connected universe that includes a film and a new video game. This ambitious undertaking aims to create a unified story across various mediums, offering fans a multi-faceted adventure with their favorite tomb raider.
