Teigen initially believed she had a miscarriage and was unaware that she had an abortion. "There's such a stigma around the word abortion," she said. "Nobody wants to say abortion... I didn't even know I had one."

However, after Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, Teigen came to realize the true nature of her experience when her husband John Legend told her, "You had an abortion." She remembered her shock, "I was like, 'No f****** way. Really? No way.' My mind was blown that day."

Meanwhile, Legend, in an interview on the Club Shay Shay podcast, further elaborated on their tragic loss. He explained that Teigen was past 15 weeks when she had an abortion due to a partial placenta abruption. This condition, in which the placenta separates from the uterus too early, can be life-threatening for both the fetus and the mother.

"Her life was in danger," he said. "She was well past 15 weeks when she had to have an abortion."

Teigen has since been vocal about her experience, emphasizing that "abortion is healthcare." She also expressed her desire to amplify the voices of those who have gone through similar ordeals.

"People that have an abortion after 15 weeks almost always wanted to keep the baby," Legend explained. "But there's some kind of complication that came up that they have to have an abortion."

Teigen and Legend's openness about their experience sheds light on the often overlooked realities of pregnancy complications and the importance of access to safe and legal abortion services.
