AceShowbiz - An upcoming episode of ABC News Studios' "Impact x Nightline" will focus on Liam Payne's untimely demise. "One Direction: Liam Payne's Final Days" will stream on Hulu on Thursday, October 24.
Led by Juju Chang, the special will feature exclusive interviews with individuals close to Payne, including Mary Byrne, a former "The X-Factor" contestant who lived with Payne and the rest of One Direction during the singing competition.
The special will delve into the circumstances surrounding Payne's death, which occurred on October 16 when he fell three floors from a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Argentinian prosecutor's office has since determined that the cause of death was multiple traumas and internal and external bleeding.
Interviews with social psychologist Dr. Azadeh Aalai, One Direction fan Natalie Barada and ABC News contributors will shed light on the broader context of Payne's death and the pressures faced by young artists in the music industry.
Payne had been struggling with addiction during his time with One Direction and after the band's breakup in 2016. He had disclosed battling suicidal thoughts and drinking heavily while on tour. In July 2023, he revealed that he had spent 100 days in rehab and had been sober for six months.
Following Payne's death, revelations have emerged that he had various substances in his system at the time of the fall, including pink cocaine, a drug that often contains a mix of methamphetamine, ketamine, MDMA and others. Sources have also reported that a makeshift pipe was found in the hotel room where he was staying.
The special will also address the concerns raised about the lack of protection and support for young performers in the music industry. Commentators have emphasized the need for greater care and accountability to prevent similar tragedies from occurring.
