During a recent episode of the "Jamie Kern Lima" podcast, Metz revealed that her stepfather, Crayton Hodge, would "threaten to lock the cupboards" to control her eating habits.

This act was a part of what she described as "mental, physical, emotional abuse for sure." Metz's comments echo the stories she shared in her 2018 memoir, "This Is Me: Loving The Person You Are Today."

Reflecting on how her weight impacted her treatment over the years, Metz expressed, "Why does my weight equate my worthiness? And as a 12-year-old kid, it's like, how do you reconcile that in your mind?"

The actress shared her struggles with feeling different from her peers and the stigma associated with being overweight, "There's so much stigma about weight, and there still is for a myriad of reasons, but I think there's this idea that like, 'Oh, you can't put the food down,' or 'You're lazy.' " Metz recalled how boys showed interest in her friends but not in her, making her feel like "I'm unworthy."

Adding another layer to her story, Metz talked about how people's perceptions of her changed after she became famous. "Before the show, I could go on an airplane and someone could not want to sit next to me if they were too squished, or they were going to be like, 'Oh, gosh, here comes a big girl that I have to sit next to.' "

However, after landing a role in 'This Is Us,' people treated her differently. "But because now I'm on a TV show, they don't care. Or they're like, 'Oh, well, you're famous.'"

Despite the fame and accolades, which include Golden Globe nominations and SAG Awards, Metz continues to deal with the scars from her past. "The emotional stuff... they're like little nicks, little cuts, and eventually, you bleed out. It is painful," she said. She strives to heal those wounds but acknowledges it's a slow and challenging process.
