AceShowbiz - Chandler Kinney, who played Tabby on the "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin", has spoken out about the show's cancellation and the broader challenges faced by teen dramas on streaming services.
Following the show's termination after two seasons, Kinney told TheWrap that she and her castmates struggled to find a niche in the young adult genre on Max. She emphasized that shows like hers and "Sex Lives of College Girls" were in a unique position on the streamer.
"We as a cast felt that we were always navigating that and trying to find our fit over the last couple years," Kinney said.
Despite the show's critical success, with both seasons receiving a 90% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Max has not released data on its viewership performance. Kinney expressed frustration over the cancellation, stating that "if you look at the numbers and the statistics, the decision is a bit confusing."
In an interview with ET Online, Kinney shared that her castmates supported her during the announcement and praised the show's unique qualities. She emphasized the importance of showcasing strong female characters who experience vulnerability, growth, and redemption.
"It’s so rare that you see five strong women leading a show who are not only vulnerable but then, like, can have weak moments and then come back and be stronger and learn and make mistakes. It’s such a fun show because, it’s like, showing women being women, and, like, growing up, you know, and so I was just so grateful to tell those stories," she said.
While the cancellation of "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin" may raise questions about the future of teen dramas on streaming, Kinney remains optimistic about her projects. She has several upcoming ventures, including the possibility of a tour with the cast of "[r=Dancing with the Stars]" or "Zombies" in 2025.
The broader implications of the cancellation highlight the challenges faced by teen dramas on streaming platforms. Max's smaller portfolio of programming for Max and its tendency to cancel shows after two seasons have raised concerns about the lack of opportunities for these shows to grow and evolve.
While teen dramas have a dedicated audience, platforms like Apple TV+, Hulu, and Paramount+ are largely missing from this space. This neglect of the teen drama genre limits the opportunities for shows like "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin" to thrive.
