AceShowbiz - Jon Stewart returned to "The Daily Show" to discuss potential "October surprises" that could impact the upcoming presidential election. He expressed concern that such revelations often benefit Republicans and questioned the ethics of Elon Musk's recent appearance at a Donald Trump rally.
Stewart criticized Musk for supporting Trump's MAGA movement and for offering incentives to register voters in swing states. He labeled Musk's behavior as "election interference" while dismissing the former president's accusations of interference against Mark Zuckerberg in the 2016 and 2020 elections.
Stewart also took aim at Musk's comments on free speech and the Second Amendment. He argued that guns do not protect free speech, which is ensured by the consent of the governed and various mechanisms within the Constitution. He condemned Musk's advocation of using guns to intimidate or suppress opposing viewpoints.
"It's not free speech if only Trump's admirers get to do it without consequence," Stewart said. "Guns don't protect our free speech. Our free speech is protected by the consent of the governed laid out through the Constitution. It's not based on the threat of violence. It's based on elections, organizing referendums, a judicial system."
Stewart concluded by expressing his preference for a society where rights are determined through legitimate democratic processes rather than by the number of armed supporters. He warned against irresponsible and reckless invocations of violence to settle political disputes.
