AceShowbiz - After a New York magistrate judge initially denied bail for Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, his legal team filed an appeal to the district court. However, on Wednesday, September 18, U.S. District Judge Andrew L. Carter upheld the previous decision, ruling that the government had provided "clear and convincing evidence" that Combs posed a risk to the community.
Combs, who faces charges of racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution, attended the hearing in person and will remain at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
Combs' attorney Marc Agnifilo argued for his client's release, proposing a bail package that included $50 million bond, home detention with GPS monitoring, drug testing and restrictions on visitors. However, prosecutors maintained that Combs' history of witness intimidation and obstruction of justice made him a flight risk.
"The government has shown by clear and convincing evidence that the defendant is a danger to the community and poses a serious risk of flight," said Emily Johnson, Assistant U.S. Attorney.
Federal authorities claim that Combs used his influence to coerce and abuse women for years, engaging in "Freak Offs"-elaborate, drug-fueled events where female victims were pressured into sex acts. According to the indictment, Combs used blackmail and violent tactics, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings, to prevent victims from speaking out.
Prosecutors raised concerns about an incident in 2016 where Combs was captured on hotel surveillance video assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura. Agnifilo dismissed the incident as a "lovers' quarrel," but Johnson argued that it demonstrated Combs' propensity for violence.
Despite the defense's efforts to paint Combs as a respected businessman and loving father, prosecutors presented evidence of over 50 victims and witnesses who have come forward with allegations.
Combs' legal team has indicated that they will continue to fight for his release, but a trial date has not yet been set.
