AceShowbiz - Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy stars in the upcoming historical drama "Small Things Like These", based on a dark and harrowing secret in Ireland. Set in 1985 Ireland, "Small Things Like These" follows Bill Furlong (Murphy), a coal merchant who discovers a disturbing secret kept by the local convent. The film delves into the real-life history of the Magdalene Laundries, where women deemed "fallen" were imprisoned and exploited.
In the trailer, Murphy's character witnesses a mother forcibly taking her young daughter into the convent. This event sparks a chain reaction as Furlong confronts not only the abuses within the institution but also his own buried grief and trauma. Despite warnings to be cautious, Furlong digs deeper, uncovering shocking truths that could have dire consequences.
The film is adapted from Claire Keegan's acclaimed novella and stars an ensemble cast including Emily Watson, Clare Dunne, Michelle Fairley and Ciaran Hinds. It was written by Enda Walsh and directed by Tim Mielants, who previously helmed the acclaimed police procedural "The Responder".
Murphy, who recently won an Academy Award for his performance in "Oppenheimer", has received praise for his nuanced portrayal in "Small Things Like These". The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival to critical acclaim, with critics highlighting Murphy's exceptional performance.
"Small Things Like These" is produced by Murphy himself, alongside Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's Artists Equity. The film is set to hit theaters on November 8.
