AceShowbiz - McFly member Tom Fletcher, who recently joined "The Voice UK" as a coach alongside bandmate Danny Jones, has been candid about his experiences with mental health, particularly bipolar disorder.
Fletcher, now 39, admitted that he had been struggling with emotional extremes since childhood. After years of uncertainty, he was finally diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a condition characterized by severe mood swings.
"Ever since I was a child, I've always been highly emotional...I'd feel excited one moment, then the polar opposite the next," Fletcher recalled. "But I think everyone just thought that's who I was."
Beyond mood swings, Fletcher faced other challenges during his early days of fame. He confessed that his weight became an issue, leading him to stop eating and consume mostly coffee. "It was so unhealthy. I would struggle with down periods...I kept much of it from my wife. Like many men, I would hide it from those closest to me," he said.
A turning point came when Fletcher watched a documentary by Stephen Fry about bipolar disorder and depression. The film resonated with him so strongly that he "just cried."
Inspired by Fry's courage, Fletcher sought professional help and was officially diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He credits his friend Harry with providing support and understanding, saying, "Ahhh, that makes so much sense."
Fletcher emphasizes the importance of breaking down the stigma associated with mental health issues. "Since then, more and more people have spoken out about their mental health. It's nothing to be ashamed of," he said.
He credits the birth of his children for bringing about significant improvements in his mental health. "Having kids was the best thing that happened to me. They've taught me more about myself than I thought was possible. Parenthood helps you be less selfish," Fletcher shared.
