AceShowbiz - Brittany Cartwright's decision to divorce Jax Taylor has been described as a "long time coming" by a close source. On Tuesday, August 27, Cartwright, 35, filed for divorce from Taylor, 45, citing "irreconcilable differences,"a culmination of their rocky relationship highlighted on several Bravo shows.
According to court documents obtained by multiple sources including PEOPLE and TMZ, Cartwright's filings requested primary legal and physical custody of their 3-year-old son, Cruz, though she has agreed to allow Taylor visitation rights. She also asked the court to terminate spousal support for both parties.
Reflecting on the rocky road, Cartwright stated in an episode of their joint podcast "When Reality Hits" that they were taking "time apart" for her mental health. "I know on my last podcast, I alluded to many marriages going through rocky times," Cartwright said. "Yes, marriages in general are very hard and I've had a particularly rough year this past year. Jax and I are taking time apart and I made the decision to move into another home."
A source close to Cartwright highlighted that her decision wasn't made lightly but felt essential for her and her son's well-being. "There's a lot that has transpired over the past few months that she could not look past," the insider revealed. "This decision wasn't made lightly but she feels adamant that it was the right one."
The estranged couple, who met in 2015 and married in 2019, had their breakup documented in the season finale of their show "The Valley". Cartwright expressed on the show, "I know that I've put up with a lot of crap that Jax has put me through, but I wouldn't have Cruz if I had gotten rid of him a long time ago. So now I just think that now that I have Cruz and I've woken up from the situation, I just feel like, for his sake and for my mental health, I just can't stay here anymore."
Jax Taylor recently completed a 30-day in-patient treatment stint, reportedly for his mental health struggles. Although Cartwright was supportive of this decision for the sake of their child, insiders say she does not wish to have any further involvement with him. Taylor, feeling a mix of emotions, acknowledges the necessity of the divorce despite his sadness over the turn of events.
As life moves forward, both Cartwright and Taylor remain professionally tethered, continuing to work on the second season of "The Valley". Given the reported tensions and dramatic past, the show's upcoming season looks set to be as compelling as ever.
Their representative has yet to issue an official comment regarding the divorce proceedings.
