AceShowbiz - The "Rust" shooting incident, which resulted in the unfortunate death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injury to director Joel Souza, continues to be a hot topic of discussion. The incident occurred in October 2021 when actor Alec Baldwin was holding a prop gun that inadvertently discharged during a rehearsal.
In a most recent interview on Bill Maher's "Club Random" podcast, renowned director Quentin Tarantino shared his thoughts on this tragic event and the subsequent legal outcomes.
"It's a situation, I think I'm being fair enough to say, that the armorer - the guy who handles the gun - is 90% responsible for everything that happens when it comes to that gun, but ... the actor's 10% responsible," stated Tarantino. He emphasized the shared responsibility, adding, "You are a partner in the responsibility, to some degree."
Baldwin faced an involuntary manslaughter charge which was dismissed in July by a New Mexico judge. The dismissal came after prosecutors were found to have withheld critical evidence from Baldwin's legal team.
Baldwin, who always maintained that he did not pull the trigger nor know why the gun was loaded with live ammunition, expressed relief following the conclusion of the case, stating, "There are too many people who have supported me to thank just now."
In his interview, Tarantino suggested that actors should take an active role in ensuring their weapons are safe, advising, "Actors should personally inspect their weapons to ensure there are no bullets in the barrel or other issues before using them in scenes." This assertion reflects the director's strong belief in collaborative responsibility for safety on set.
The armorer on the "Rust" set, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and is currently serving an 18-month sentence. Assistant director Dave Halls also faced legal repercussions but took a plea deal for negligent use of a deadly weapon.
Tarantino's remarks and the legal outcomes of the case highlight the importance of stringent safety protocols in filmmaking, particularly when firearms are involved. The tragic incident on the set of "Rust" serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers in movie production and the need for accountability at every level.
The ongoing discussions and legal actions related to the "Rust" incident underline a larger conversation within the film industry about how to safeguard against such tragedies and determine the balance of responsibility among those involved.
