AceShowbiz - Joseph Quinn, who plays the Emperor in the upcoming "Gladiator II", acknowledges the legacy of Joaquin Phoenix's award-winning performance in the original film. However, he and co-star Fred Hechinger also sought inspiration from other memorable villains, particularly Philip Seymour Hoffman's Davian in "Mission: Impossible III" and Gary Oldman's Zorg in "The Fifth Element". Quinn was drawn to these characters' gleeful embrace of their wickedness.
Director Ridley Scott compares Quinn and Hechinger's characters, Gata and Caracalla, to Romulus and Remus, the mythical founders of Rome who were raised by a wolf. He suggests that the brothers' upbringing may have resulted in psychological damage.
Hechinger cites the late Sex Pistols frontman Sid Vicious as a surprising but inspiring influence on his portrayal.
Paul Mescal, who leads the cast, was attracted to "Gladiator II" for its epic scale and the opportunity to surprise audiences with his physical performance. Scott's involvement was a major factor in his decision.
"Gladiator II", which also stars Denzel Washington, will be released by Paramount Pictures on November 22.
